Frequently Asked Questions
-
A write-in candidate is someone whose name does not appear pre-printed on the ballot. Instead of selecting a pre-printed name voters must write the candidate's name in the designated write-in space. Write-in candidates must still file all required paperwork and comply with all campaign finance laws — just like any other candidate. The only difference is that your vote requires you to write the name rather than simply checking a box.
-
Yes — this is the most important step. In Florida a write-in vote is only counted if the voter fills in the bubble next to the write-in line AND writes the candidate's name. If you write the name but do not fill in the bubble your vote will not be counted. Both steps are required.
-
Write as clearly and accurately as you can. Florida election supervisors use reasonable judgment when reviewing write-in ballots — a vote that is clearly intended for a specific candidate will generally be counted even if there is a minor spelling error. However to be safe write JOSE ELIAS-TORRES exactly, including the hyphen between Elias and Torres.
-
